Yesterday I was supposed to go to dinner with my friend Bonnie. So I found it strange when she called me at work on Tuesday to say that our plans had been slightly altered. Although she promised me dinner, we had another obligation to fulfill first. Bonnie had double booked herself, but rather than cancel our plans, she figured I should just go with her to help make sandwiches for the local program Kids Food Basket (http://www.kidsfoodbasket.org/) and she proceeded to tell me that we needed to be there a little before 6. Although making sandwiches is not my idea of a good time, I happily agreed to help her out if it meant that I still got to spend the evening with her (long overdue).
This is the direction board that we had to work off of. As you can see, the big circled number is 1564, and yes, that is how many peanut butter sandwiches we had to make. You can also see the "Thank You" banner that is hanging on the wall... banners like this one and MANY others similar to it cover the walls to show just how important and much appreciated this program is by the local children. Kind of makes you step back and look at the bigger picture.
The supplies are all donated by the public or surplus from local grocers.
Here is Bonnie... what a character! She definitely provided the entertainment for the evening.
This was my work station. As you can see in the picture below, I got to stand right next to Bonnie in the corner. I have never seen so much peanut butter in my life.
These women have a system... an assembly line if you will of sandwich making!
Here is some of our final product. We had a total of 17 boxes with about 90 sandwiches per box and all of that in about an hour. Just think of all those kids that will have fully bellies now tomorrow. What an amazing thing.
After we made the sandwiches another group came in to actually "pack" the sack lunches. These little girls were adorable and what a GREAT way to give back to the community as a family.
